Perkins+Will was engaged by the University of Miami to work with the School of Arts and Sciences to develop design concepts for the Cox Science Center. The study built upon earlier efforts by the Campus Architect, Juan Rodriguez-Vela and a Steering Committee from the school. The team had determined that even though the Cox Building had been a pace setting structure in its day, it no longer projected an image consistent with current educational thinking nor with the mission of the University. Perkins+Will was asked to develop a short and a long term vision which would not only allow the Cox Science Center to gradually be transformed, but for the University to develop an economic plan to execute the project in Phases. It is our strong conviction, that this approach will not only serve as a model for the work at hand, but also, as a model for other projects across the University, which could gradually renew the existing Campus into a competitive and engaging setting suitable for 21st Century Learning and Discovery.
